River wasn't too sure about meeting that big horse.

I took a road trip out to Grand Island today. I'd heard that the Sandhill Cranes were starting to arrive. And while I did see cranes, the Snow Geese stole the show on this trip. There were THOUSANDS of them!!! The sky was just full. I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like it. It was so cool!!

kubben > Paddling the high seas of Lake Manawa.
(5-25-08)

I decided to brave Lake Manawa today. It was windy, so I figured all the area lakes would be a little choppy. And since I was going to get wet no matter where I went, I decided I might as well go to the roughest of them all, Lake Manawa. And boy, was it rough.

Most of the lakes I go to are small, "no wake" lakes. Motor boats are allowed on them but they cannot go over 5 mph. Lake Manawa, however, is a full fledged lake, with people jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and just generally speeding all over. So it gets rough. And add the high winds and WOW!!! There were a few times when the phrase "What the hell was I thinking!!" went through my head. I got totally soaked from my head to my toes.

Needless to say, I left the good camera safe on dry land, and I had my little waterproof Olympus with me. It doesn't always take the greatest pictures, but as wet and wild as it was today, it worked well.

And as I've said before, in spite of the rough water and wind, any day on the lake is a good day :). I could have stayed out there forever.
kubben > Just a deer in the woods.
(1-12-09)

This is from Sunday when I was over at Lake Manawa. It was nasty around here yesterday afternoon, and once I made it home from work, I stayed there. And now this morning we're starting out at -3F (wind chill -17). I can tolerate the 20-30 degree temps, even the teens, but these sub-zero temps suck.

When I was over at Lake Manawa I was lucky enough to have arrived near where the deer hang out just as somebody was throwing corn to them. So there were several that right up near the road.
kubben > My Jazzy girl.
(8-15-08)

Just a shot of my beautiful Jazzy girl. And I'm playing with lenses.

I need help/advice from anybody who has been on a trip, specifically to Ireland. I'm going there in a couple of weeks...woo hoo!!! So what lens should I take? I have a 17-85, but it is f/4.5-5.6. Or would a 24-105 f/4 be better? The 24-105 is faster, but not as wide. Oh, such a problem :). Wider or faster??

And from anybody who has been there, any tips on the best places to visit? We're renting a car, heading out, and trying to fit as much of the country (Ireland and Northern Ireland) into 9 days as we can. E-mail me at kubben@aol.com if you have any advice/suggestions.

And I also have to say that I've had a hard time commenting much lately. I've still been checking out all of your wonderful photos, but time seems to have gotten away from me lately and I haven't been commenting much (at all). Maybe I can catch up this weekend.

And for those of you on the other side of the pond, could you tell the rain to quit in 2 weeks!!
kubben > An apple a day.
(11-14-08)

I just got Lightroom today. And this is my first attempt at using it on a raw file. I thought I'd start with something easy. But the consensus is that I have no idea what I'm doing. I think I need to read the book that I bought. And tomorrow is supposed to be a cold, blustery day, so it should be a good day to stay in and learn how to use it.
