Once upon a time, Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska spelled backwards) was the premier thoroughbred race track in the area. But alas, the casinos moved in across the river into Iowa and took racing revenue away from Ak-Sar-Ben. And the citizens of Nebraska voted that slot machines would not be allowed in Nebraska, and revenues at Ak-Sar-Ben continued to drop until at last, the track closed. It was a sad time for racing fans.

However, Horsemen's Park opened up shortly after Ak-Sar-Ben closed in order to allow the gamblers to partake in off-track betting. But in order to continue to operate, Horsemen's Park had to run live racing. The first year, they held just a couple of races. And now, 10 years later, they are up to a 4 day meet featuring 18 races. And tonight was opening night.

I do like to watch the horses run. This is the first time I have tried to take pictures, though. And I'll be going back again on Friday to do it again. I do like the horse races. Unfortunately, I'm lousy at picking the winners.

Up close and personal at Fontenelle Forest.

Edit: To answer Vandana below, yes, this was a captive bird. I've never been able to get anywhere near this close to a wild one. This hawk is at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. She had apparently fallen out of the nest as a fledgling in 1998 and was found with a broken wing. The bone was repaired and healed well, but there was nerve damage and she can't use it, so she couldn't be released. She now lives at the Nature Center and is used for education. They periodically have events where they bring out the birds for people to see up close. She was an absolutely beatiful bird.

Just another shot from the zoo. I'm heading out for my taco ride, and don't know if I'll be back early enough to post any of those shots, so I'm throwing this one out there for today. These gorillas are fun to take pictures of. They pose so well.

And now I'm off to the Wabash Trace. I hope last night's storms haven't made the trail too mushy.

kubben > "Hello"

The first Saturday of the month is photo club at the zoo. So that means zoo pictures!! They had several different macaws out in a garden area of the zoo. This one is a Blue and Gold Macaw and it could say "Hello".

River had surgery yesterday to remove a mast cell tumor that I found on her leg on Monday. You can see the shaved area and incision on her back thigh. A 4 inch incision and 14 staples really haven't slowed her down though. She's probably more sad because it is cold, rainy, and muddy and I won't let her stay outside.

Hopefully, surgical removal of the tumor will be the cure. We won't get the pathology results until next week, and I'm crossing my fingers that it was a grade 1 tumor.

I managed to get back over to Mutual of Omaha the other might to get a shot of this after dark. The lights they have shining on the building short of shimmer, so it looks like moving water. It was pretty cool.

And now I'm off to the lake. Everybody have a great, and safe, 4th.

The frogs are emerging. When on land, it's impossible to sneak up on these guys as they can feel the vibration in the ground when you walk towards them and all I ever hear is the sound as they plop into the water. But in my kayak, I can get so close that the camera won't focus anymore, and I have to back away.

I almost didn't go out today. I got to Lake Zorinsky and the wind was horrible. Much worse than I thought it would be. But I knew if I could get to the feeder stream it would be protected in there. So I braved the wind and waves, and managed to paddle the mile and a half straight into 20 mph winds and I made it. My shirt was pretty much soaked by the time I got to the stream. But it was nice up there, and I figured the paddle back would be easier. It wasn't though. The kayak likes to go sideways in the wind, so I had a heck of a time keeping it straight when I went back. But I made it. And in spite of the wind, a day on the lake is always a good day.
