kubben > Who goes there.
(8-11-07)

This is a first for me. My first wild owl. When I saw this bird, it was flying off in the distance with a smaller bird harassing it. I thought it might be a Red Tailed Hawk. I made my way over to where it had landed in a tree, and as I got closer, I realized it was a big owl. I'm pretty sure it's a Great Horned Owl.

I found the bird that lays the easter eggs ;).
It's a Lilac-breasted Roller.

I went over to a friend's tonight to take some pictures of her boys and niece. And then I had dinner with them and enjoyed a couple of beverages. After the storms rolled through, we started this fire and roasted some marshmallows. I had a very enjoyable evening and I sure hope I got at least one or two shots that she'll like.
kubben > SNAKE!!!
(5-26-08)

This little guy was lucky that I almost stepped on him BEFORE I started mowing the yard. But then he had to suffer the humiliation of being trapped in a bucket while I mowed. I couldn't let him go without taking a few pictures. And he was the perfect little snake and cooperated wonderfully while I posed him for photos. He is now happily slithering away back in the alley.

I took a road trip out to Grand Island today. I'd heard that the Sandhill Cranes were starting to arrive. And while I did see cranes, the Snow Geese stole the show on this trip. There were THOUSANDS of them!!! The sky was just full. I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like it. It was so cool!!
kubben > Paddling the high seas of Lake Manawa.
(5-25-08)

I decided to brave Lake Manawa today. It was windy, so I figured all the area lakes would be a little choppy. And since I was going to get wet no matter where I went, I decided I might as well go to the roughest of them all, Lake Manawa. And boy, was it rough.

Most of the lakes I go to are small, "no wake" lakes. Motor boats are allowed on them but they cannot go over 5 mph. Lake Manawa, however, is a full fledged lake, with people jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and just generally speeding all over. So it gets rough. And add the high winds and WOW!!! There were a few times when the phrase "What the hell was I thinking!!" went through my head. I got totally soaked from my head to my toes.

Needless to say, I left the good camera safe on dry land, and I had my little waterproof Olympus with me. It doesn't always take the greatest pictures, but as wet and wild as it was today, it worked well.

And as I've said before, in spite of the rough water and wind, any day on the lake is a good day :). I could have stayed out there forever.
kubben > Calmer waters.
(6-15-08)

This is another shot from yesterday. You're probably getting tired of these shots of my boat and paddle, but I liked this one. After fighting the winds and rough water, I managed to get to the end of the lake and I floated into these reeds where it was protected. I was able to relax a bit and get the kayak mopped out. You can see the edge of one of my sopping wet towels laying over the top of the boat by the paddle.

From here I pretty much floated with the wind back to the ramp area, which was under water. The boat dock, ramp and gravel parking lot were all under a couple feet of water. I had parked up on the higher blacktop lot and launched in the lower flooded lot. It was kind of different paddling through the parking lot to the lake. It looks like this week is supposed to be dry, so all of the high water should start receding a bit.

River is the ultimate nosy neighbor. She doesn't miss anything that goes on next door. They also have two dogs over there, and she has quite a path worn along the fence where she runs back and forth.
