Every March, hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate through central Nebraska. They stop for about 4 weeks and fatten up by feeding in the fields before continuing their migration north to their breeding grounds. They are concentrated around the Platte River between Grand Island and Lexington. During the day they are spread out feeding in the fields, but at night they fly en mass into the Platte River where they roost overnight. (
Crane Facts)
During the day the cranes move out into the thousands of acres of fields to feed. You have to drive around the gravel roads to find them. It helps to pinpoint their locations if there are a large number of them in the air.
