Henry Doorly Zoo - Baby Malayan Tigers : On June 19, 2007 an ultrasound pregnancy examination was conducted on a 10 year old female Malayan tiger at Omaha’s Zoo. The female was found to be approximately 70 days pregnant with at least two cubs. This will be the third litter of cubs this female has had at Omaha’s Zoo.

The female tiger was introduced to a nine year old male Malayan tiger for breeding on April 18, 2007 and the pair continued to breed until April 21. It is possible there are more cubs but her dense coat interfered with a complete and definitive ultrasound. Normal litter size for tigers is two to four cubs. Tiger gestation varies by individual but averages about 110 days, so the cubs will be due around August 1.

The male Malayan tiger is a part of the national tiger conservation program, the Tiger Species Survival Plan. Both the male and the female came to Omaha’s Zoo in 2003 from Malaysia’s Melaka Zoo and are very genetically important animals. The animals were wild caught when young as part of Malaysia’s program in managing tigers that take livestock or pose a direct threat to humans.

The female tiger is particularly noticeable because when young, she lost a front leg in an injury in Malaysia. She is well adapted to her condition and it has had no effect on her abilities as a mother. Zoo staff anticipate she will raise these cubs successfully as in the past. The female is currently on display at the Omaha Zoo’s Cat Complex until she gets nearer to her due date. Once closer, she will be taken off display to deliver the cubs in a back holding area, allowing her to feel more comfortable and secure. Zoo staff will monitor her and the cubs by video camera, viewable by the public in the Cat Complex.

These two cubs were born at 4:00 am on July 30, 2007. Both are males.
