Your Bio

Welcome. My name is Kathy and these are my photos. I am a Medical Technologist at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and have gotten interested in photography as a hobby. I'm definitely an amateur photographer and I take pictures because I enjoy it. Animals, wildlife and nature are my favorite subjects, but I'll pretty much shoot pictures of anything. I'm always learning and striving for that perfect shot.

Who goes there.

This is a first for me. My first wild owl. When I saw this bird, it was flying off in the distance with a smaller bird harassing it. I thought it might be a Red Tailed Hawk. I made my way over to where it had landed in a tree, and as I got closer, I realized it was a big owl. I'm pretty sure it's a Great Horned Owl.

I took a road trip out to Grand Island today. I'd heard that the Sandhill Cranes were starting to arrive. And while I did see cranes, the Snow Geese stole the show on this trip. There were THOUSANDS of them!!! The sky was just full. I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like it. It was so cool!!

The stars were shining brightly this morning so I knew the sky was clear, and I headed out at 5:30 AM just to get over to this lake. I had read/heard that this was the place to go for sunrises. They were right. The sun on the mountains and the reflection on the lake was stupendous. I love this place.

It was another cold, cloudy day here at the lake, so we watched the finches again. The squirrels were doing a nice job of cleaning up the bird seed that the finches were throwing on the ground.

I was out and about today and saw this abandoned house from the highway. I managed to find a way over to it and get some pictures. This swing was hanging from the trees in front of it. Here are the

Guess who I saw last night. Great show!!!

And no, cameras were not allowed at the show, but I did manage to sneak mine in. And I'm sure all of the people in the front rows with the cell phone cameras probably got better shots than I did from way in the back. This is cropped and doctored up with a watercolor filter. I really didn't get anything great, and I was a little paranoid at getting the camera out, so I didn't take as many as I'd have liked. But I got enough.

It's not supposed to be a very nice weekend, so I figured I better get the lawn mowed tonight. After I was done, the dogs, cats, and I sat outside for a while enjoying the sun that made a surprise appearance. I liked the light shining on Jazzy, so I had to get a shot of her.

Once upon a time, Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska spelled backwards) was the premier thoroughbred race track in the area. But alas, the casinos moved in across the river into Iowa and took racing revenue away from Ak-Sar-Ben. And the citizens of Nebraska voted that slot machines would not be allowed in Nebraska, and revenues at Ak-Sar-Ben continued to drop until at last, the track closed. It was a sad time for racing fans.

However, Horsemen's Park opened up shortly after Ak-Sar-Ben closed in order to allow the gamblers to partake in off-track betting. But in order to continue to operate, Horsemen's Park had to run live racing. The first year, they held just a couple of races. And now, 10 years later, they are up to a 4 day meet featuring 18 races. And tonight was opening night.

I do like to watch the horses run. This is the first time I have tried to take pictures, though. And I'll be going back again on Friday to do it again. I do like the horse races. Unfortunately, I'm lousy at picking the winners.

Red-tailed Hawk

Up close and personal at Fontenelle Forest.

Edit: To answer Vandana below, yes, this was a captive bird. I've never been able to get anywhere near this close to a wild one. This hawk is at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. She had apparently fallen out of the nest as a fledgling in 1998 and was found with a broken wing. The bone was repaired and healed well, but there was nerve damage and she can't use it, so she couldn't be released. She now lives at the Nature Center and is used for education. They periodically have events where they bring out the birds for people to see up close. She was an absolutely beatiful bird.

One of these things is not like the others.
